Jingle Ball 2008 for The New York Times

Katy Perry is just so much fun, love her. Jingle Ball is always a fun show to shoot. One of my favorite moments that didn't get into the review was this shot of Bruce Springsteen backstage, taking a picture of Brody Jenner posing with one of Bruce's daughter's and her friends. It's the superstar as regular dad/fan.

This show was supposed to start at 12pm. Late enough for a Sunday night show I would say....out in Williamsburg...on a freezing night.
Instead it started at 2am. Thing is the band was so good that I ended up really enjoying the show and staying till the end. I got hom at about 3:30.

This shot is on the cover of Pulse today for their story on Underground dining in the city and around the country. Becky and Hayden of Homeslice West where great and we got some really nice images, besides which they fed my an awesome meal!

The Black Lips did some questionable things with a chicken and the feathers of what may have been the birds relatives. I didn't see any earplugs on the bird and only hope that his hearing wasn't irreparably damaged. The link above is Rolling Stone's Gallery from the event.
It's always alot of fun going out to Coney Island for Siren. What they are planning on doing to the boardwalk makes me want to hurl all the hot dogs I ate while I was there this time. Can't we just landmark the whole area? Does the part that has personality have to be where everything is torn down to make way for generic condo's? God forbid they develop what's already blighted in Coney Island instead or ripping out it's beating heart.

Guitar Hero at Pianos for The New York Times

I've been playing guitar hero for a while myself. I had no desire to own a playstation (although I have been known to get addicted to certain arcade games) until guitar hero came out. Christine got me the ps2 with two guitars and the game for my birthday. What a perfect gift! When I got this assignment I knew I was going to tear it up!

This was a very interesting show. I left it feeling like I had been listening to the Beach Boys re-interpreted for the age of the internet and pro-tools. Despite Noah being alone onstage with just a bunch of knobs to twiddle and his voice it was fairly mesmerizing show.

Nite out with Fred Durst for The New York Times Style Section

Just to be clear, despite the implications in the article Ms. Valevich is not a hooker by any means, regardless of how she is maybe portrayed in the story. Never having met Fred before I was somewhat worried at the beginning of the night that things would suck however exactly the opposite was the case. Fred turned out to be a really personable, intelligent and nice guy who was obviously completely infatuated with his son and a doting father. Rock on Mr. Durst!

About this shot. We'd been out for around four hours at this point and got back to Fred's hotel , Soho House after dinner at Morimoto. They have a pretty strict policy about no shooting in Soho House but I managed to talk them into letting me shoot in the lounge when Fred's son Dallas came down. I love this shot.

This is an interesting photo, especially in color. I used a new technique to achieve the results that made the lights look the way they do. Can you guess what it is?
No retouching or photoshop was involved at all. Everything was in the camera.

Giada was trying on clothes for and appearance she was making at the J. Mendel show during fashion week. We shot alot of stuff I really liked. She's fun to work with and this is the image USA Today ran online. She says she doesn't like her legs...well I'll agree to disagree.

My homage to Robert Doisneau and Alfred Eisenstaedt for The New York Times "Public Displays of Affection" Sunday Style

This awesome assignment came from the Sunday Style section and is called Public Displays of Affection. The article, which I haven't seen as of this writing refers to the fact that people in New York are still uncomfortable with seeing gay people kissing in public. I was asked to shoot James Lopez and Kaolin Bass kissing around the city and to meet them in Trump tower. The rest was up to me. Doisneau's famous picture of the couple kissing in front of the cafe immediately sprang to mind as well as Eisenstaedt's iconic image in Times Square at the end of the 2nd world war for Life magazine. With that in mind we did the shoot this morning and a few images that I didn't expect at all happened along the way.The rest of the take can be seen at the link in the subject line.

What can you say? Shot Madge at Coachella and that was awesome and this show at the Garden was just spectacular. The projections of the horses running (stunning) behind her and the equestrian theme in general was really gorgeous.

I love that this the shot my editor's picked as the cell phones in the frame is the main reason I shot it. They seem to have agreed that there was something special about this comment on the modern experience of concert going for both the artist and the fans and the new twist I came up with on the self referential setup we've seen before of a photographer photographing another photographer.

Morrissey at Austin Music Hall

A link to Jon Pareles' blog on the festival. Four days of sometimes wonderful, sometimes puzzling, always entertaining zooming from place to place. What I love about shooting in Austin is how close the venues are to each other, how many of them there are and what great variety you get to experience in such a short amount of time. The most intense day for me was easily the last night, Saturday during which I shot two different showcases that were running concurrently with each other during a one hour period as well as working with Jon on the bands he was covering. After doing this together for four (or is it five?) years we've developed a good system of staying in touch and bopping around from place to place. He's inexhaustible and invariably knows about the most interesting bands to check out. It never ceases to amaze me how knowledgeable he is about what's out there.

Israel "Cachao" Lopez with Bajo at Jazz at Lincoln Center. NY Times 1/31/2006

This was a great moment. Cachoa and the flutist in the shot had been jamming back and forth, improvising with the whole orchestra listening in silence and the audience completely still. Cachoa was completely focused on what the flutist was doing and I shot this just as the back and forth ended. There was complete silence in the hall and my click was the first noise just a split second prior to thunderous applause from the audience and the orchestra.
